ParticipationinExtemporaneousReadingteachesastudenttointroduceandreadexcerptsfromproseorpoetry for thepurposeofappreciationorenjoyment.Thestudentwilldeclare,priortoeachdraw,his/herchoiceofgenre.
Specific sourcesforreadingwillbeannouncedinthefallofeachyear.TheLeagueOfficewillidentifyspecific poems andstoriesforcontests.NOCUTTINGSWILLBEMADEAVAILABLEBEFORETHEACTUAL CONTESTS.
The orderofspeakingshallbedeterminedbylot.Thirty(30)minutesbeforethecontestbegins,thefirstreadershall draw threecuttings.Thereadershallimmediatelychooseoneofthem,andreturntheothertwowhichwill then beplacedwiththeothercuttingsremainingtobedrawn.Thecuttingschosenshallberecordedbythe event manager.Eachofthesucceedingreadersshall,atintervalsofeight(8)minutes,inturn,followthesame procedure. Thestudentmaynotperformacuttingthatshe/hehasperformedinanyroundofthatcompetition.In the eventthatthestudentdrawsapreviouslyperformedcutting,she/heshalldrawasubstitutecutting.
After thecontestanthasdrawnacutting,thestudentshallnotconferorhaveanycommunicationwithacoachor others untilthereadinghasbeendelivered.EachreadershallpresentthecuttingdrawsliptotheRoom Manager orJudge(s)intheround.
While theinadvertentskippingorsubstitutionofasinglewordorphraseinanExtemporaneousreadingmay occasionally andunderstandablyoccur,studentsmustbecarefulthatentiresentencesormorearenotskipped during thepresentation.Contestantsmustnotreadmoreoftheselectionthanisincludedinthedrawncutting.
For poetry,studentsmustreadselectionsintheorderlistedonthedrawslip.Forprose,studentsmuststartatthe beginning oftheprescribedcuttingandreadasmuchofthecompletecuttingastimepermits.Studentsare allowed tostopreadingatanypointwithinthelastminute.Ifthetimehasexpired,thestudentshallcompleteonly the sentencealreadybegun.Allowablecuttingwouldincludetheeliminationof"hesaid"and"shesaid"oncea character hasbeenestablishedortheomissionoflanguageobjectionabletothecontestant.
The studentshouldbejudgedontheabilitytointroducetheexcerptwithafewappropriateextemporaneous remarks, andtoreadtheselectionwitheffectivevocalandbodilyexpression.
The studentmayusea"teaser"asapartoftheintroduction.However,the"teaser"mustbeapartofthe actual drawnsectionofthestoryorpoem,andthe“teaser”passagemaynotbeeliminatedwithinthereading subsequently presented.
THE ENTIREDELIVERYTIME,INCLUDINGTHEREQUIREDINTRODUCTION,SHALLNOTEXCEEDSEVEN (7) MINUTES.
