Participationinstorytellingshouldtrainstudentstorecreateafamiliarstoryextemporaneously.Aselectedlistof fifteen (15)storieswillbeannouncedinthefallofeachyear.Theorderofpresentationshallbedeterminedbylot before thecontestbegins.Thirty(30)minutesbeforethecontestbegins,thefirststorytellershalldrawthree titles. Thestorytellershallimmediatelychooseoneofthemandreturntheothertwo,whichwillthenbeplaced with theotherstoriesremainingtobedrawn.ThetitlechosenshallberecordedbytheEventManager.Eachof the succeedingperformersshall,atintervalsofeight(8)minutes,inturn,followthesameprocedure.
In allrounds,includingfinals,inALLlevelsofcompetition,astudentmayNOTrepeatastorypreviously performed inpreliminaryroundatthatlevelofcompetition.Intheeventthatthestudentdrawsa previously performedstory,she/heshalldrawasubstitutestory.
After thecontestanthasdrawnatitle,thestudentshallnotconfer,orcommunicateinanywaywithacoachor others untilthepresentationhasbeendelivered.Eachstorytellershallpresentthestorytellingdrawsliptothe Room ManagerorJudge(s)intheround.Nobooks,notesorpropertiesshallbetakentotheplatform.
Introductory comments(whichmaybeprecededbyateaser)mustprecedethetellingofthestory.Thecontestant must notaddsubplotsormakerevisionstothestory’sactualeventsthatchangetheoriginalplotorviolatethe story's style,intent,andmood.Cuttingofalengthystoryisallowabletomeettimeconstraints.Theuseofa concluding statementthattiesbacktotheintroductionisallowedbutnotrequired.
Because thisisnotarecitation,thecontestantwillbejudgedontheabilitytorecreatethestoryinhis/her own words,withemphasisonadirectconversationalstyleandspontaneousbodilyaction.Thecontestant must maintainthestory'smoodandformatandmustdeliverthestoryextemporaneously.
TIME LIMIT,INCLUDINGREQUIREDINTRODUCTORYCOMMENTS,ISSEVEN(7)MINUTES.Ifthe storyteller iswarnedthattimehasexpired,thestorytellermayconcludewithonefinalstatement.
As requestedbytheSpeechAdvisoryCommittee,therewillbenoReadersinStorytelling.TheTournament Committee asksthatJudgeshavereadthestoriesiftheyhaveindicatedawillingnesstojudgethiseventatany level ofcompetition.
